The Rt Hon Lord Lloyd-Jones has been honoured by Gorsedd Cymru at the 2024 National Eisteddfod, hosted in Rhondda Cynon Taf this August.

The Gorsedd honours, presented annually, recognise individuals from all parts of the country for their achievements and their commitment to Wales, the Welsh language and local communities across the whole of Wales.

Lord Lloyd-Jones was presented with a Blue Robe for services to Wales in the field of law at the annual festival, which took place this year in his home town of Pontypridd.

Those who have succeeded in the fields of Law, Science, Sports, Journalism, Media, local / national activities become Honorary Druids –Blue robes – for their services to the nation.

On his induction, Lord Lloyd-Jones said:

“It is a great honour to become a member of the Gorsedd.

“The ceremony was a very emotional experience, in particular as the National Eisteddfod was held this year in my home town, Pontypridd. It was a great pleasure to see so many old friends there. It was a very special day.”

The Rt Hon Lord (David) Lloyd-Jones, Pontypridd, is a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and a legal scholar. He is the first member of the Supreme Court to come from Wales. He was the first to deliver a judgment in Welsh in the Supreme Court. He was previously a High Court judge and a Lord Justice of Appeal.

Before becoming a judge, Lord Lloyd-Jones was a Fellow of Downing College, Cambridge and practised at the Bar of England and Wales.

As Chair of the Law Commission, he led innovative research and reform work in relation to the law of Wales and secured the extension of the Commission’s statutory scope to include projects for the Welsh Government.

He is President of the Law Council of Wales which brings together legal practitioners, judges and scholars to consider issues involving legal education and the development of the legal professions in Wales.

Lord Lloyd Jones will join the Legal Wales Conference 2024, hosted in Haverfordwest on 11 October 2024.
