One of the priority aims of the Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) Wales is to increase access to justice in Wales, and the legal community plays a key part in that.

In our recent event with the Commission in Wales, Legal News Wales hosted an event to show law firms how they can utilise crowdfunding to help make change happen and increase access to justice in Wales. This event took place on the 26 February 2021 as part of our St David’s Day programme to celebrate the legal sector in Wales.

We’ve provided a recording of the event, below, for you and your colleagues, along with further information to contact the Commission in Wales to see how it can support you and your clients.

The EHRC has seen great success over the last year with events to increase awareness of Equality and Human Rights in the legal community in Wales.

The next step is to launch a Strategic Litigation Guide for Wales, which is a step by step guide for organisations who are thinking about using the legal system to bring about significant change in law, policy or practice related to equality and human rights.

The aim is to make change happen in Wales and this event will explain one way to help.

What we covered

  • An overview of the strategic litigation guide, with a focus on how it might be used by organisations and legal professionals in Wales.
  • Examples from England of how organisations or networks have used strategic litigation.
  • An example of a Welsh strategic legal case (Driver v RCT Council), how it worked in practice and what happened.
  • A discussion to allow attendees to share ideas or highlight strategic cases that they’ve worked on.

Speakers

  • Angharad Price, Principal Legal at the Equality & Human Rights Commission Wales (profile below)
  • Michael Imperato (Head of Public & Administrative Law at Watkins & Gunn), who acted for the Claimant in Driver v RCT Council (profile below).
