Nic Neal, former Director of Legal Services at South Glamorgan County Council and then the Land Authority for Wales, has died suddenly on 2 November at the age of 75.

Nic (pictured below) will be well known to members of the legal and property communities in Cardiff who were active in the 1980’s and 1990’s, when Nic played a key role in the legal aspects of the early phases of the regeneration of Cardiff Bay around Atlantic Wharf and the authorisation of the Taff Crossing.

He was also involved in the negotiations to establish the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation and in South Glamorgan’s role as co-promoter of the first Cardiff Bay Barrage Bill.

A friend of Nic’s told Legal News Wales:

“Nic will be remembered as an able negotiator and problem solver.

“Those who worked with him in his prime will remember him fondly for his morale boosting cheerfulness under pressure when deals were to be completed; and excellent company once the day’s work was done.”

Nic moved to the Land Authority when South Glamorgan CC was abolished where he oversaw the acquisition of the site of what is now the Newport Wetlands National Nature Reserve, as compensatory habitat for the loss of the Cardiff Bay mudflats.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday 26th November 2024 at the Wenallt Chapel, Thornhill Crematorium, Cardiff.
