Geldards has launched a new Shariah Family Law team that will be led by Cardiff-based lawyer Aysha Chouhdary. The Senior Associate is one of the few family lawyers in the UK advising on religious, cultural and international jurisdiction issues and specifically on Shariah Law and Islamic Rulings.
The specialist service has been launched to help guide clients through the complexities of the dissolution of a marriage under Islamic/Shariah Law and sits alongside Geldards’ Family Law team. This new service for Muslim clients advises on the civil and religious aspects of Shariah Family Law, providing a sensitive understanding of cultural issues for clients based in the UK and overseas.
Aysha has over 10 years’ experience dealing with complex religious and cultural matters (often with an international element). She is a multi-linguist, with languages including Urdu, Mirpuri, Punjabi, Hindi and English. On announcement of the new service launch, Aysha said:
“I am really excited about launching this new service at Geldards LLP, having practiced in this niche area for over a decade. I am passionate about providing holistic family law advice, to all my clients, and understand the nuances of religious and cultural issues.”
As well as offering advice on Nikah contracts alongside prenuptial agreements, the team advises clients in respect of Mahr issues, the validity of marriage, divorce and financial orders obtained abroad, Shariah divorce as well as financial matters and arrangements for children (keeping in minding Ramadan and Eid, etc).
