Cardiff & District Law Society (CDLS) has launched its 2022 awards campaign for lawyers and firms in the region.
The award categories cover equality, diversity and inclusion, and access to justice achievements and also include the annual Simon Mumford memorial award for outstanding contribution to CDLS and the legal sector in Wales.
The awards will be judged by CDLS council members and sponsors of this year’s awards – the Solicitors Regulation Authority & Eversheds Sutherland.
The winners of the four award categories will be announced at its Annual Dinner in Cardiff on the 16 September 2022.
Time is of the essence to enter, with a short 800 word submission form to be sent to the Society by Friday 2 September 2022 (details below). Any legal entity or lawyer in the Cardiff & District region (including the the Vale of Glamorgan) can enter.
The award categories are:
- Best Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Initiative of the Year
- Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Champion of the Year
- Best Access to Justice Initiative of the Year
- Simon Mumford Award – this is a judges’ choice award for an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the legal sector in Wales.
Award Criteria
Best EDI Initiative
Sponsored by the Solicitors Regulation Authority.
Criteria:
An award in recognition of an initiative that has made a difference in cultivating a more diverse and inclusive workplace in the Welsh legal sector.
- Please provide details in respect of the initiative you have introduced, approach taken, objectives and outcomes. The judges are looking for evidence of initiatives which have been put into action for employees or clients and which achieve measurable and tangible results.
- Examples could include recruitment, retention and promotion, staff networks, accessibility in the workplace (or something else), using data and monitoring to inform your approach.
- Submissions that cover one, some, or all aspects of diversity (including gender, ethnicity, social mobility, disability, health and wellbeing and sexual orientation) are invited.
- Open to law firms and in house teams (private/public sectors) within the Cardiff & District area.
EDI Champion

An award in recognition of an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to diversity and inclusion in the Welsh legal sector over the last three years.
Criteria:
- Please provide a biography/ case study outlining the leadership and best practice demonstrated.
- Submissions that cover one, some, or all aspects of diversity (including gender, ethnicity, social mobility, disability, health and wellbeing and sexual orientation) are invited.
- Open to all individuals working within the legal sector within the Cardiff & District area.
Best Access to Justice Initiative
An award in recognition of an initiative or project that has improved access to justice for disadvantaged, marginalised and/or vulnerable people in Wales.
Criteria:
- Please outline the project, its significance, it’s goals and evidence that these goals have been/are being achieved with measurable impact. The judges are looking for evidence of a proactive approach to combating access to justice issues and a demonstrable benefit to clients.
- Open to law firms, chambers, in house (private/public sectors) and signatories of the Law Society Pro Bono Charter, within the Cardiff & District area.
